There can be many definitions to the word genre. To me, genre is the type of text in literature. The way you write or read can determine how you choose the genre of a text. I have written about true events and sometimes even written to spark conversation with a person, these are both in a category of genre. Depending on who your audience is, you will quickly understand that genre is very important. I like to think as genre as an artistic idea, enabling an artist to be creative with his or her work.
The author defines genre as recognizable, self reinforcing forms of communication. Some similarities that I see is that the audience is very important when describing genre because the way the audience receives your text is what ultimately what will classify different genres. When writing for an audience the goal is to spark communication and get your point across. The only difference in our definitions online seem to be directed towards exactly what is see in the text while the authors says its more about the audience because they are the judges of your text.
In the many commencement speaks that I have heard the speaker gives a lot of advice and images of a path that you can be led on in life. They give you advice from what they have learned In their lifetime and tell you how to live your life. For Collin’s commencement speak he did not give a lot of advice except for to slow down in life and see things for what they are. He delivered a speech that didn’t make you want to rush into the next part of your life and see what will happen. He delivered a speech that would make you want to live each day to the fullest and experience as much as you can in your life. Based on my observations a commence address is a speech of motivation to get people to be their best in life. A commencement speech is something to make people feel good about the event and wrap things up. I watched Justin Timberlake’s commencement speech address from 2019, he talked a lot about his life in the speech and gave some people from his life who helped his get to where he is now. He gave one word od advice and that was there are going to be failures in your life but listen to people because you are defined for what you define failure as. He taught them to appreciate those moments because it will make you appreciate who you are. This keep my observation of a commencement speech true because he gave motivation and helped other find their true self so they can be great. The last one I watched was Will Ferrell address in 2017. He talked about his life and the tough times in his life. He told people to not be afraid of failure and to think what if they never tried. This also kept my observation of commencement speeches true.
